It all began on a much smaller scale however. Founder Robin Webb, self-taught in the field of shoemaking, was inspired by the idea of high-quality shoes produced without leather. It was two discoveries along the way that were of vital importance for him: firstly, he was fascinated when he heard about the use of old car tires for shoe soles in parts of Africa due to the lack of other raw materials; secondly, he encountered a synthetic microfiber used in furniture, mainly for seat upholstery on yachts. The material not only resembled leather in look and feel, but it was also breathable and, as is necessary on a yacht, was extremely robust.

Webb was convinced that his discovery was a significant one, and this was to be confirmed by the success that quickly followed. Soon, the demand was so great that he was unable to keep up production, where each pair of shoes was made by hand to order. He therefore decided to upscale production by contracting footwear factories to produce shoes, initially in England and later in Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Webb and VEGETARIAN SHOES have stayed true to the company’s founding principles. The business still focusses on the use of environmentally friendly materials, sustainable production and fair working conditions, and the business is still run from a small shop in Gardner Street in the South-eastern English town Brighton. VEGETARIAN SHOES has shown the world that good shoes don’t need leather.
