Vegan Shoes By Ahimsa

‘Ahimsa’ is a term which originates from the old Indian language Sanskrit and means “do not harm”. It is one of the core values of 3 major religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism). It’s no coincidence that a small company from Brazil chose this word for its name; in contrast, the company AHIMSA stands for the very concept that the word describes.

AHIMSA was founded in 2013 by Gabriel Silva, a long-time vegan, who set himself the goal of producing high-quality vegan shoes that at the same time satisfied his own high ethical standards, and it’s fair to say that he was very successful in reaching his goal.

The shoes, bags and belts from AHIMSA are all lovingly hand-made in a small factory in Franca in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The employees there have an eight-hour day with set working hours – something which unfortunately can’t to be taken for granted in the industry – and receive a fair wage for their work.

The raw materials that are used are chosen with sustainability in mind, including cotton and natural rubber; microfibers from recycled PET bottles; and water-based adhesives. The fact that everything produced by AHIMSA is free from animal products is perhaps obvious. Nevertheless, the respect for all forms of life belongs is one of the core principles of the company.

The positives don’t stop at the highly sustainable production; the shoes by AHIMSA simply ooze charm. This is partially due to the materials used as well as the careful handicraft that goes into making the shoes. It almost certainly also has something to do with the mild climate and the lifestyle of the region in which the shoes are produced and all of their shoes radiate an airy summer vibe that cuts through even the greyest of autumn days.
